Schenectady man convicted of aggravated criminal contempt

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- A Schenectady man involved in a domestic dispute in July 2022 was convicted in Schenectady County Court on Thursday. During the incident, Joel Fowler, 33, became physically violent towards the victim who is the mother of his children. The victim also had an Order of Protection in place issued by Albany City Court.Fowler was convicted of:Aggravated criminal contemptCriminal contemptTwo counts of criminal mischiefThree counts of endangering the welfare of a childFowler was remanded pending sentencing proceedings. He faces a maximum sentence of two and a third years to seven years indeterminate for the aggravated criminal contempt conviction. He also faces a maximum sentence of 364 days of local incarceration for each misdemeanor conviction. Sentencing is scheduled for December 6.

Jury finds Troy man guilty of attempted murder

TROY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- A 23-year-old Troy man was found guilty of attempted murder in the second degree following a jury trial. Zeoli was accused of shooting a victim on August 18, 2022. The victim sustained injuries to the chest, neck, and left hand. Zeoli will be sentenced on October 19. He faces a maximum sentence of 25 years in state prison.

Cohoes man sentenced to 11 years for drug trafficking and obstruction of justice

ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- A Cohoes man was sentenced to 135 months in prison for trafficking methamphetamine in the Capital District and obstruction of justice. Andrew O'Connor, 36, was also sentenced to five years of supervised release. Get the latest news, weather, sports and entertainment delivered right to your inbox! O'Connor admitted to distributing ounce quantities of methamphetamine in Cohoes in March, April, and June 2022. Investigators also seized a package of over one pound of methamphetamine that was addressed to him. O'Connor also admitted that he contacted his co-conspirator in an attempt to delete information on several of O'Connor's cell phones. This case was investigated by USPIS and the FBI’s Capital District Safe Streets Gang Task Force, which includes FBI Special Agents and members of federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies. Assistant U.S. Attorney Dustin C. Segovia prosecuted the case.

Firefighters battle locust tree engulfed in flames

MOHAWK, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- The Town of Mohawk Fire Department responded to Persse Road for a tree on fire at 1:16 a.m. on Thursday. Firefighters located a locust tree engulfed in flames. Town of Mohawk firefighters, with assistance from the Canajoharie Volunteer Fire Department, were able to suppress the fire. The origin was traced to a resident who attempted to eliminate a bee nest within the tree.There was no damage to anything other than the tree. The Town of Mohawk Fire Department reminds residents to exercise caution when employing fire near a potential fuel source or a residential structure.

Motorcycle rider identified in fatal Alton crash

ALTON, Ill. -- Authorities have identified the man involved in the fatal crash that occurred on September 25. The victim was driving his motorcycle when he drove into a vehicle. The accident took place at 7 p.m. at the intersection of Homer Adams Parkway and Morning Star Drive. Kenneth D. Staggs, 48, was traveling westbound on Homer Adams Parkway on his Kawasaki motorcycle when he collided with a passenger vehicle, resulting in a fire. The Alton Fire Department responded to the scene, extinguished the flames, and provided first aid to the people in the other vehicle, who had minor injuries.

Family of “Good Samaritan” Johnny Hurley settles $2.7 million lawsuit against Arvada police

The family of Johnny Hurley, the 40-year-old man mistakenly shot and killed by an Arvada police officer after he stopped an active shooter in Olde Town Arvada in June 2021, will settle a federal civil rights lawsuit against the police department for $2.775 million.Hurley’s family announced the settlement at a news conference on Thursday afternoon at the law firm Rathod Mohamedbhai in downtown Denver.The lawsuit was set to go to trial on Oct. 6 and was “heavily litigated” up until this week, attorney Matthew Cron said.Hurley’s mother, Kathleen Boleyn, said she was relieved to finalize the settlement and not put her family and friends through a trial.“You can’t erase what Johnny did just because his life was erased,” Boleyn said. “Without my son, my life is diminished.
